Steel Roofing FAQs

Roofing Frequently Asked Questions

HOW CAN METAL ROOFING SAVE ENERGY?
Many conventional roofing materials, asphalt shingles for example, absorb energy from the sun. Metal, on the other hand, reflects most of the sun’s rays. At day’s end, metal also cools more quickly. As a result, the attic space remains cooler, as does the living space below. Conventional roofing materials tend to absorb and retain heat, therefore requiring more energy to maintain a cooler living space. Combining a cool roof color with your insulation creates an energy efficient roof system.
CAN I INSTALL METAL OVER MY OLD ROOF?
Yes. Because of the light weight of metal, it is easily installed over existing roofing materials, without the disposal problems commonly associated with re-roofing projects. And, because steel roofing panels are installed in sheets, labor costs for installation are kept to a minimum.

WHICH METAL ROOFING SYSTEM IS RIGHT FOR ME?
In residential metal roofing, there are generally three types of systems. One is an exposed fastener system. This type of system utilizes pre-formed metal panels where the fastener is seen. These panels are typically installed over decking and felt paper for new construction or over framing strips when applied over existing roofing materials. Fasteners are then screwed through both panel surfaces and panel laps to secure them to the decking or framing strips. The second type of system is a concealed fastener system which can be standing seam. In the standing seam system, panels are installed over decking, utilizing metal clips. Batten caps are then installed, concealing both panel legs and clips. Although personal preference plays a major role in the selection process, the type of system selected is greatly influenced by the style of the residence and by project budget. The third and the fastest growing has the appearance of a shingle in a much bolder look. These can be stone coated, ceramic coated and still give the roof of a lifetime.
WHAT ARE SOME OTHER ADVANTAGES OF METAL ROOFING?
Metal is non-combustible and is exceptionally durable. Properly installed, metal roofing will not absorb or be damaged by water, will easily shed snow and ice and is highly resistant to damage from wind or storms. Being such a durable and sustainable product, your metal roof will virtually last as long as your home. Different paint systems offer different warrantys, but generally the paint is warrantied for 40 years against sxcessive fading, cracking, and chalking in accordance with industry testing standards. In addition metal roofs require very little if any, maintenance over the life of the roof.
WILL IT MAKE NOISE WHEN IT RAINS?
Modern metal roofing is often installed directly over plywood decking and felt or existing roof. Therefore, any noise generated by rain will be similar to that created by conventional roofing materials. Also, as with conventional materials, attic insulation will provide additional noise reduction. The myth of a noisy steel roof comes from barns that were built with steel roofing installed on open frame buildings with no insulation.
